Re-Programming Wireless Systems

Overview

Our initial forays on this topic have involved building a serial programming system for the Mica motes. Serial reprogramming of the mica motes is intended to provide the following: 1) reprogramming capabilities to the ENL testbed, and 2) a spring board to wireless reprogramming development. The same serial interface allowing for data collection can also be used to reprogram the motes in the mote's native 128 mode. Since parallel cables are bulky and have a short run distance, serial cables provide a sleaker programming interface to the motes over a longer distance.

In order to understand the capabilities of the motes, software components were built to provide a stepping stone to wireless reprogramming. Software to send an image to a mote, store the image, and reboot the mote over the serial interface is the first stepping stone to single hop, and in the future, multi-hop wireless reprogramming.
